The Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP)

(Cuddle companion optional)

Who can benefit?

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is helpful for people experiencing:

  • Anxiety or chronic stress

  • Emotional reactivity (e.g., meltdowns, frustration, irritability)

  • Social difficulties (e.g., avoiding interactions, trouble reading social cues)

  • Sensory sensitivities (e.g., being overwhelmed by noise, lights, or textures)

  • Sleep challenges

  • Attention or focus issues

  • Trauma-related challenges

  • Feeling "stuck" in fight, flight, or freeze responses

It can also be beneficial for autistic individuals and those with ADHD, or PTSD, as well as anyone seeking a greater sense of calm and balance.

What is the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)?

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is an evidence-based listening therapy designed to support emotional regulation, social engagement, and overall well-being. Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges and based on his Polyvagal Theory, SSP helps your nervous system shift from a state of stress or overwhelm to one of calm and connection.

Using specially filtered music, SSP focuses on specific sound frequencies to "reset" how your brain and body respond to stress. This can improve your ability to process sounds, communicate, and feel more at ease in your environment.

Polyvagal Theory: the Science of Feeling Safe

Polyvagal Theory focuses on what is happening in the body and the nervous system, and explains how our sense of safety, danger or life-threat can impact our behaviour. Understanding Polyvagal Theory gives us a scientific framework that can be applied through physiological, or “bottom-up” therapies, to help change and improve how we feel, think and connect with others.

How does it work?

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) involves listening to calming, specially designed music for short sessions over a few days or weeks. The music is tailored to support your nervous system by reducing sensitivities and encouraging feelings of safety. The process is guided by a trained practitioner, who will help you move through it at your own pace, adjusting as needed.

In some cases, SSP can be used as a standalone tool to promote nervous system regulation. However, it is most effective when delivered as part of a tailored therapeutic package, ensuring a comprehensive approach to addressing individual needs and goals. You do not need to receive therapy from me, but I would need to liaise with your therapy provider to ensure the best possible care for you.

Why consider the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)?

Many people report improvements in:

  • Feeling calmer and more in control of emotions

  • Reduced sensitivity to loud or sudden noises

  • Improved focus and attention

  • Better sleep and relaxation

  • Stronger social connections and ease in communication

If you are feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck, SSP can be a helpful tool to bring more balance into your life. It’s a gentle, non-invasive way to support emotional and sensory regulation and can complement other therapies or practices you’re using.

What equipment do I need?

You'll need the following equipment:

  • A device: iPhone or iPad with iOS 12 or later, or an Android device less than 2 years old.

  • Internet connection: Your device needs to be connected to the internet to use the app services.

  • Headphones: Over-ear (cup style) headphones that are not noise-canceling, or which allow you to turn noise-canceling off. Bluetooth over-ear headphones are acceptable, provided you stay close to your device while listening.

  • Adapter: You may need an adapter to connect your headphones to your device if necessary.

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is delivered via an app called Unyte Health, you will be able to access this and all play lists once subscribed.

How much does it cost?

Providing exact costs upfront is challenging, as it depends on your tailored package. Some individuals can access the SSP programme independently, while others require minimal or more comprehensive support as part of a therapeutic package. The entire SSP programme involves 5 weeks of listening. Below is an example package, but please note, all users must attend an initial assessment session (£120 per session).

SSP Basic Plan £350.00

  • Access to the SSP Programme: 3 months of access to the full SSP programme.

  • Access to e-Book: "Effective Processing and Regulation" for additional resources and support.

  • Weekly Email Check-Ins: Receive weekly email support to help guide you through the programme.

  • Final Feedback Session: A comprehensive feedback session at the end of the 3 months to discuss your progress and next steps.
